Porsanger municipality lies at the heart of Finnmark County by Porsangerfjord. Porsanger municipality stretches from mountain plain to coast, and includes the Porsangerfjord. Norway´s fourth longest fjord has its estuary at North Cape and its waters surround the world´s northernmost archipelago with a unique bird life and fascinating flora. The municipality has an impressive number of fishing lakes and several of Norway´s best salmon fishing rivers. Porsanger has a very interesting cultural life, and is today the only municipality in Norway officially defined as both trilingual and tri-cultural.

Porsanger is the third largest municipality in Norway by area, with 4.873,9 square kilometres and approximately 4.000 inhabitants. The fjord is the fourth longest in Norway, and the longest in North Norway. The municipality is on the shores of the Porsangen fjord, a wide, open body of water with many islands. The biggest settlement and administrative centre is the town of Lakselv at the fjord´s end, but there are smaller hamlets spread around on both sides, notably Kistrand, Olderfjord, Børselv, and Billefjord. On the western side of the fjord, one finds the Stabbursdalen National Park, with the world´s northernmost pine forest. The northernmost winery is located here, using crowberries instead of grapes. Midnight sun from 16 May to 27 July. Polar night from 25 November to 16 January.

Lakselv Airport, Banak has connections to Tromsø and Kirkenes operated by Widerøe, as well as charter flights in the summer season. The airport is also used by the Royal Norwegian Air Force´s Station Group Banak, and with the Norwegian Army´s garrison at Porsangmoen, the military presence is quite heavy.

LAKSELV

The town of About this sound Lakselv is the largest settlement and administrative centre of the municipality Porsanger. The population was 2,146 in 2009. Lakselv Airport, Banak is located in Lakselv, with connections to Tromsø, Alta and Kirkenes operated by Widerøe, as well as charter flights in the summer season. Salmon fishing throughout the summer months is popular, and small golf course also exist. During the winter, skiing is popular, and there are a number of lit skiing tracks available in the area. Nightlife is limited, but there are two hotels with bars and restaurants, and a number of bars and some independent restaurants.

REINØYA

Nature reserve in Porsangerfjord by Børselv river. Unique flora and fauna and truly Northern Europe's largest location for dolomites.

RODDINES

Beach area between Lakselv and Børselv. You can easily see how the shoreline has moved as the land has risen from the sea following the Ice Age. The area is protected.

SILARFJELLET MOUNTAIN

Ancient Saami sacrificial site between two stone pillars - Laila and Kristoffer - actually a giant rock split in two high up on the mountain.

SILARFOSSEN WATERFALL

Silfarfossen on the Eastern side of the Porsangerfjord you will find Northern Europe´s second largest canyon. Børselv Canyon and Silfarfossen waterfall at road RV 98 northeast from Børselv.

STABBURSDALEN NATIONAL PARK

Includes the world´s northernmost coniferous forest. Stabbursnes Nature Reserve - large marsh and shallow water area with diverse fascinating bird and plant life. The area is protected - with traffic forbidden on the marsh and shoreline area for Stabbursnes (Valdamyra).

TROLLHOLMSUND

Stone formations reminescent of trolls. According to the legend, the trolls were turned to stone because they did not manage to hide themselves before the sun came up. Marked path up to the stone formations.

MIDNIGHT SUN

We have the Midnight Sun in our region from 20th May - 20th July. During this period, the sun stays above the horizon, and it is light 24 hours a day. The sky must be clear and there must be unobstructed visibility northwards in order to see the Midnight Sun. A summer night on the fjord or in the mountains is an experience not to be missed, you can go fishing in the fjord, which contains splendid variation of fish, or you can take a walk in the wilderness surrounding.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Aurora Borealis is the Latin name for the Northern Lights – solar winds that meet the atmosphere in a zone around the magnetic North Pole. The Northern Lights are only visible when the sky is dark and clear, from August to April, and they are most intense from 10 pm to midnight. The region on the 700 northern latitude is a fantastic place for experiencing the beautiful and intense play of colours given off by the Northern Lights.

POLAR NIGHT

The dark time, or the long, dark Polar Night, lasts from 30th November - 12th January - there is only a twilight-dusk type of light (the blue light) for a few hours during the middle of the day. This does not mean that it becomes totally dark, however. The aurora borealis trails its multicoloured banner across the sky and the moon lights the scene just like the nightlight of Our Lord. The experience of the winter with the uniqueness of the light, the northern lights and snow is fantastic. Especially beautiful is the blue light southwards, just before it becomes dark.

BIRD WATCHING

Porsanger is an area of rich and varied bird fauna. Here one can find such species as Pine Grosbeak. Away from the woodlands, it is the surrounding wetlands that have the greatest diversity. During spring, thousands of Red Knots stop to rest and feed along the shores of Porsangerfjord.

HIKING

Marked trails are found in Lakselv, Brennelv, Stabbursnes and Olderfjord. Possibilities for cross-country orienteering in Lakselv and Billefjord.

FISHING

Porsanger is a virtual paradise for fishing and outdoor enthusiasts. There are several rivers and lakes containing salmon, trout and Arctic trout. Additionally, you can fish for saltwater fish in the fjord. In the area from Karalaks and in an easterly direction you will find several lakes containing fish. Light terrain especially suitable for walks with the whole family, including small children.

Stabburselva is known for its beautiful surroundings and excellent salmon fly-fishing. Lakselva is known for big sized Salmon, and Børselva is well known for its crystal clear water and beautiful surroundings. Lakselva (meaning salmon river) is known as one of the best salmon rivers in Norway. The biggest salmon of the season 2009 was a whopping 55 lbs. and a total of eight fishes weighing more than 40 lbs. The average weight of all salmon caught in 2009 was a little more than 13 pounds. Lakselva also claims to have some of the biggest grayling in the world. Besides great fishing, Lakselva offers fishing in wonderful surroundings, and it's not many other places you can experience catching an Atlantic Salmon in the midnight sun. Lakselv airport, Banak, is situated only a few feet from the river mouth, which makes it easy to access the river.
